is nothing more than a hunk of pizza dough taken from the fridge. rolled in a bit of flour to prevent sticking, then handed over to eager hands, along with some cookie cutters and a pair of rolling pins. it bought me a total of 17 minutes--just enough time to fix a real pizza and slide it into the oven.
we have made play dough in the past, but had neither cream of tartar or food coloring on hand. truth be told, i'm a little reluctant to use food coloring since hudson (obviously) likes to eat the dough. at least we know that this stuff is 100% edible!

I've used tumeric and beet juice to "dye" homemade playdough with decent success. It doesn't create the fake neon colors you can buy in the store but you don't have to worry about your little guy eating any strange chemicals either.
this is a great idea, my daughter loves real dough, she once carried around a lump of it for a whole day till it got really gross in her pocket :)
The other night I made biscuits and after they were in the oven my 20 month old was entertained for a good 20 minutes playing with leftover bits of dough. Which is an amazingly long time for him to focus on one activity!
